Mill Creek High School held a car show on Saturday, March 22, to raise funds for Relay for Life.
Sixty-five car owners took part in the event, which was part of Mill Creek's year-long Relay for Life fundraising efforts. Earlier in the school year, the Mill Creek Relay for Life team organized the Miss Portray pageant, hosted pictures with Santa and held a "Pink Week" fundraiser in an attempt to meet the team's $50,000 goal for 2014.
According to the Gwinnett Relay for Life website, Mill Creek has collected $14,214 so far for cancer research, making the team currently one of the top three in Gwinnett County. The proceeds from the car show will add nearly $2,400 to that total according to Mill Creek Relay for Life team captain Camille Larkin.
Other upcoming fundraising events for the Mill Creek team include a "Pink Out" baseball game fundraiser planned for April 16 and a luminaria sale. Larkin said the team's goal is to sell 500 luminarias by May 1. So far, the team has sold 50. Luminarias, which honor a cancer survivor or someone who has lost their battle with cancer, may be purchased online. Additionally, each member of the Mill Creek Relay for Life team is encouraged to raise at least $100. Fundraising efforts for 2014 will continue through Aug. 31 and may include another event this summer, Larkin added.
The major event of the year -- the Relay for Life fundraising walk -- will be held May 9-10 at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds. For more information, visit the Relay for Life Gwinnett website.
