On May 9, six local sports figures -- including former North Gwinnett track and football star Kibwe Johnson -- will be inducted into the Gwinnett County Sports Hall of Fame.
Johnson, who competed in the 2012 Olympics, is a two-time Georgia state high school champion in discus. He represented the United States in the World Championships in 2007 and 2011 and was a gold medalist in the 2011 Pan-American games. The Gwinnett County Public Schools Foundation website lists him a a three-time NCAA champion and as only the third American to pass 80 meters in the hammer throw.
Johnson -- along with Olympic swimmer Eric Shanteau (Parkview), Braves scout Buck Buchanan (Parkview), All Ivy-Leaguer Jackie Drouin (Collins Hill), NFL player Jeff Backus (Norcross) and NFL player Jon Stinchomb (Parkview) -- will be honored during an induction ceremony at the Gwinnett Center. Veteran NFL coach and player Dan Reeves is scheduled to speak.
