Since 1998, customers in the area served by the Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGL) have been able to choose their natural gas provider due to deregulation. However, municipal gas providers were not affected by deregulation. Georgia residents living in areas serviced by municipal gas providers must purchase gas from their area's designated provider, which for Dacula and Buford residents is the City of Buford.
While area residents may not have a choice of providers, City of Buford Gas Superintendent Daren Perkins said the city's rates compare favorably to those of deregulated providers.
The charts below show what Perkins described as an "apples to apples" comparison of City of Buford gas rates compared to those of AGL marketers. The charts are based on a typical Georgia residential customer's average usage of 717 therms for the period March 2013 through February 2014.
